Apple's upcoming iPhone 17 series is packed with attractive features, but the real reason to hold off on this year's flagship models is a completely new device coming next year: the iPhone Fold.

Apple’s ‘special weapon’

Every year, Apple releases a new iPhone. Typical upgrades include camera enhancements, display improvements, battery life boosts, and occasionally a fresh design.

Each launch raises the same familiar question: "Should I upgrade now?"

This year, Apple offers compelling reasons to go for the iPhone 17. If you're after a futuristic, ultra-thin design, choose the iPhone 17 Air.

If you want the longest battery life ever on an iPhone, go for the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

If your focus is on upgraded cameras, a new chip, and other improvements, the iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone 17 Pro Max will suit you well.

Of course, waiting another year is always an option. But this time, it's not about holding out for the iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone 18 Air.

The real reason to wait lies in an entirely new device set to debut: the iPhone Fold.

A new form and user experience

After years of rumors, Apple’s first foldable iPhone is now expected to launch in fall next year.

Reports suggest the iPhone Fold will feature a 7.8-inch internal display when unfolded, slightly smaller than an iPad Mini. According to Digital Chat Station, the inner display will have a 4:3 aspect ratio. Well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo later confirmed these specs and added that the inner screen will be crease-free.

Meanwhile, the outer screen is expected to be 5.49 inches with a resolution of 2088 x 1422 and will likely use a punch-hole camera.

The first foldable iPhone will also reportedly support new multitasking features powered by iOS 27 and feature a crease-free “book fold” design.

In terms of photography, the iPhone Fold will be equipped with two rear cameras, one front camera for folded mode, and another when the device is open.

Kuo believes the rear camera will include a dual-lens system and that the phone will not use Face ID to conserve internal space. Instead, it will rely on a side-mounted power button with integrated Touch ID.

Apple is also said to be working on under-display Face ID and hidden camera technology. However, there is still no confirmation that the iPhone Fold will include an under-display camera.

If Apple does adopt under-display camera tech, it could significantly improve photo quality, thanks to Apple’s investment in advanced screen and sensor technology.

Imagine carrying both an iPhone and an iPad Mini in one single, foldable device.

Of course, the iPhone Fold won’t be for everyone. Its estimated price is over $2,000.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple’s long-rumored foldable iPhone will launch next year with a price tag around $2,000. For those willing to splurge, the iPhone Fold promises a fresh experience and innovative form factor.

This isn't just a spec upgrade or a flashy redesign. The iPhone Fold is a true “2-in-1” device. It could be the most revolutionary change the iPhone has seen.

Analyst Jeff Pu stated that the device has entered the New Product Introduction (NPI) phase at the Foxconn factory, with mass production expected to begin in the second half of 2026.

Gurman also reported that this foldable iPhone will benefit from advancements Apple made during the development of the iPhone 17 Air – the model replacing the "Plus" version this year – including display, battery, modem, and chip improvements.

If you're looking for a traditional iPhone, the iPhone 17 lineup has plenty to offer.

But if you're excited by the idea of a hybrid between an iPhone and an iPad, it’s best to wait until next year.
