Vo Hoang Hung, 38, a lecturer at Saigon University, has been named the youngest nominee for the title of professor in 2025. Remarkably, he was also one of the country’s youngest associate professors, recognized just four years ago.

According to the list released by the State Council for Professorship, 993 candidates have been nominated for professorial titles this year, including 89 professor candidates and 844 associate professor candidates across various disciplines. Compared to 2024, the number of applicants has surged from 673 to 933 - an increase of 260 or nearly 40%.

The youngest nominee for professor is Associate Professor Dr. Vo Hoang Hung, born in 1987 in Vinh Long province.

Hung is currently Head of the Department of Applied Mathematics and Informatics at Saigon University. Previously, in January 2021, he was recognized as one of the four youngest associate professors in Vietnam.

At the end of 2011, Hung was awarded three PhD scholarships and chose the prestigious Marie Curie scholarship to pursue his doctorate at Pierre and Marie Curie University (Paris 6), France. He earned his PhD in partial differential equations and analytical mathematics in 2014.

He returned to Vietnam in 2015 and worked at several institutions before joining Saigon University in 2018, where he continues his academic career.

His main research interests include inverse problems, partial differential equations, nonlinear analysis, fractional calculus, and mathematical biology.

Hung has supervised two PhD students to successful defense, completed two ministry-level research projects, and published 23 scientific papers, including 21 in internationally recognized journals.

The two youngest associate professor candidates this year are Dr. Nguyen Ha Thanh (interdisciplinary field of chemistry and food technology) and Dr. Do Quang Loc (physics), both born in 1992.

Who is the youngest professor candidate in medicine this year?

The youngest professor candidate in the field of medicine is Associate Professor Dr. Hoang Anh Tien, 46, Deputy Director of the Cardiovascular Center and Head of the Cardiology Department at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Hue University.

According to the State Council for Professorship’s 2025 list of qualified nominees, Dr. Tien, born in 1979, hails from Loc Dien commune, Phu Loc district (formerly), Hue city. He graduated with a Doctor of Medicine degree from Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy in 2003 and earned a master’s degree in internal medicine there in 2007.

In 2011, he was awarded a PhD in internal cardiology, and in 2015, he was appointed as an associate professor in medicine.

Tien currently holds multiple leadership roles: Vice President of the Vietnam Heart Failure Society, Vice President of the Vietnam Atherosclerosis Society, President of the Central Vietnam Sleep Society, Standing Member of the Vietnam Internal Medicine Society, and Standing Member of the Vietnam Sleep Society. He is also a fellow of the European Society of Cardiology (FESC), American College of Cardiology (FACC), and Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (FSCAI).

His two primary research areas include coronary artery intervention and its associated risk factors - such as sleep apnea, hypertension, and atherosclerosis - as well as pacemaker therapy and biomarkers like NT-ProBNP, sST2, T-wave alternans, and heart rate variability for predicting arrhythmias and heart failure.

Tien has received numerous national honors, including recognition as one of Vietnam’s Top 10 Outstanding Young Faces in 2007 by the Central Youth Union and the Vietnam Talent Development Fund. He also earned the “Creative Labor” medal from the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor, the Outstanding Young Physician of Vietnam Award in 2011, and the Golden Globe Award in science and technology in 2012.
