Tran Thi Thanh Thuy made a strong return as Vietnam’s top scorer in their 0-3 loss to Germany at the 2025 Women's Volleyball World Championship.
After an opening-round loss to world No. 3 Poland (1-3), Vietnam’s women's volleyball team entered their second match of the tournament determined to make a statement against world No. 11 Germany.
Despite their efforts, the Vietnamese players struggled against a much stronger, taller, and more experienced German side, who controlled the game in every set.
Vietnam had difficulty with first-ball reception throughout the match, which significantly disrupted their rhythm. Setter Lam Oanh, who impressed in the previous game, was unable to maintain her form against the European squad.
However, the brightest spot for the Vietnamese team was captain Tran Thi Thanh Thuy. After a subdued performance in the opening match, where she scored only 6 points with a 30.95% attack efficiency, Thanh Thuy bounced back in spectacular fashion against Germany.
Despite Vietnam’s straight-set defeat (18-25, 17-25, 21-25), Thanh Thuy scored a remarkable 17 points, becoming the highest scorer of the match. On the German side, team captain Weitzel led with 15 points.
Outside hitter Hoang Thi Kieu Trinh also made contributions with 6 points. While Vietnam couldn’t pull off an upset, the match offered valuable experience for the team as they continue their World Championship journey.
Vietnam will wrap up their group stage with a match against Kenya at 5:00 PM on August 27, marking the final test of their 2025 campaign.
