Among eight public universities in Vietnam with annual revenues exceeding 1 trillion VND (about 41 million USD), the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH) leads with nearly 2 trillion VND (about 79 million USD). Uniquely, it earns over 500 billion VND (20.4 million USD) annually from scientific research and technology transfer, unlike many universities that rely mainly on tuition fees.

The public university with the biggest revenue

Vietnam currently has 12 universities with annual revenues exceeding 1 trillion VND, including 8 public and 4 private institutions.

The 8 public universities are Hanoi University of Science and Technology, National Economics University, University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City, Ton Duc Thang University, Industrial University of Ho Chi Minh City, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy, and Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education.

The 4 private universities are FPT University, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HUTECH), Nguyen Tat Thanh University, and Van Lang University.

At the forefront, UEH recorded total revenue of 1.887 trillion VND (about 74.9 million USD) in 2024. Of this, 1.343 trillion VND came from education and training, with tuition accounting for 1.281 trillion VND. Other revenue included contracts and sponsorships from both government and external sources. Miscellaneous income added 61 billion VND.

Significantly, UEH generated 520.8 billion VND (20.7 million USD) from scientific research and technology transfer, representing 27% of total revenue. This makes UEH the university with the largest income from science and technology among Vietnam’s trillion-VND universities.

How much do other public universities earn from tuition?

Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy

In 2024, the university earned 1.123 trillion VND (44.6 million USD). Of this, 846 billion VND (33.6 million USD) came from education and training, including 821 billion VND (32.6 million USD) in tuition. It earned 105 billion VND (4.2 million USD) from research and technology transfer and 172 billion VND (6.8 million USD) from other sources.

Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology

The university reported 1.184 trillion VND (47 million USD) in revenue in 2024, including 1.054 trillion VND (41.9 million USD) from education and training. Tuition accounted for 873 billion VND (34.7 million USD). Income from research and technology transfer reached 126.5 billion VND (5 million USD). Other income was 418 million VND (16,600 USD).

Ton Duc Thang University

Total revenue in 2024 was 1.224 trillion VND (48.6 million USD). Of this, 1.129 trillion VND (44.8 million USD) came from education and training, with tuition contributing 1.072 trillion VND (42.6 million USD). Revenue from research and technology transfer was 44.8 billion VND (1.8 million USD), while other income was 49.7 billion VND (2 million USD).

Hanoi University of Science and Technology

The university recorded 1.502 trillion VND (59.6 million USD) in 2024, an increase of nearly 80 billion VND from the previous year. Of this, 1.343 trillion VND (53.3 million USD) came from education and training, with tuition accounting for 1.277 trillion VND (50.7 million USD). Revenue from research and technology transfer was 101 billion VND (4 million USD), while other income reached 58 billion VND (2.3 million USD).

Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education

The university earned 1.120 trillion VND (44.5 million USD) in 2024. Tuition alone accounted for 976 billion VND (38.8 million USD), while government and external sponsorships contributed just 13 billion VND (520,000 USD). Revenue from research and technology transfer was 46 billion VND (1.8 million USD), with another 67 billion VND (2.7 million USD) from miscellaneous sources.

Industrial University of Ho Chi Minh City

The university has not yet disclosed its 2024 finances. In 2023, it earned 1.011 trillion VND (40.1 million USD), of which 916 billion VND (36.4 million USD) came from education and training. Tuition made up 907 billion VND (36 million USD). Research and technology transfer contributed just 4.3 billion VND (171,000 USD), while other revenue was 90 billion VND (3.6 million USD).

National Economics University

The university has not yet published its 2024 figures. In 2023, total revenue reached 1.408 trillion VND (55.9 million USD), including 1.014 trillion VND (40.3 million USD) from tuition. Research and technology transfer brought in 42 billion VND (1.7 million USD), other sources contributed 324 billion VND (12.9 million USD), and the state budget added 28 billion VND (1.1 million USD).
