Apple classifies a product as “vintage” if it has been discontinued from distribution for between five and seven years. Although Apple stopped selling the iPhone XS in 2019, many retailers continued offering it for several years, which explains why the device is only now being added to the vintage list after nearly seven years on the market.
Notably, the iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR - launched alongside the XS - had already been classified as vintage.
The iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR were introduced together in 2018, marking the first time Apple unveiled three iPhones in a single year. The iPhone XS Max was also the first large-screen iPhone.
Being labeled as “vintage” does not mean Apple will outright refuse repairs for the iPhone XS, but whether it can be serviced depends on the availability of replacement parts. Additionally, while the iPhone XS can still run iOS 18, it will not be eligible for the iOS 26 upgrade scheduled for release later this year. However, Apple may still issue critical software updates if necessary.
In two years, the iPhone XS will transition from “vintage” to “obsolete,” at which point Apple will no longer offer repairs for it.
