Prolonged heavy rainfall caused deep flooding in many areas of Hoi An (Da Nang City) by late evening. Residents of the ancient town battled rising water levels, staying up all night and hurriedly lifting their belongings higher with every inch the water rose.
As of the evening of October 27, torrential rain continued to drench the region, and floodwaters in Hoi An’s ancient town showed no signs of receding. Locals remained on alert inside their homes, prepared to act swiftly if waters rose further.
Many residents were still scrambling to move their possessions to higher ground in an urgent attempt to safeguard their belongings.
Floodwaters from the Hoai River had already entered numerous homes located deep within the ancient town. People worked frantically to elevate household items and furniture to prevent damage.
“My family has been moving things since dawn and hasn’t stopped. If the water continues to rise tonight, we’ll need to keep working through the night. Wherever the water reaches, we just raise things higher – we don’t know where else we can go,” said Phung Chau, a local resident from Hoi An ward.
Residents helped each other transport electronics and valuables to homes not yet flooded to prevent water damage.
One family used a small boat to evacuate their household goods from a submerged home.
Local authorities remained on-site, assisting residents in relocating their belongings from flood-prone areas.
Children were evacuated by their parents to safer areas.
Floodwaters from the Hoai River surged over the embankment, flowing rapidly and making movement within the ancient town extremely difficult.
According to the People’s Committee of Hoi An Ward, around 5-6 PM on October 27, flood levels peaked above Alert Level 3, meaning the ancient town would suffer serious inundation during this flood event.
That afternoon, local authorities coordinated with emergency forces to evacuate elderly residents and young children to designated safe shelters.
Several central streets in the ancient town were submerged under more than two meters of water, forcing residents to navigate in small boats through murky floodwaters.
Residents’ belongings were relocated to safe areas to avoid further damage.
