On the afternoon of August 21, the Region II Radio Frequency Control Center detected abnormal transmission signals in Ho Chi Minh City during routine frequency monitoring.
Suspecting the presence of a fake mobile base transceiver station (BTS), the center swiftly deployed a task force, coordinated with the Ministry of Public Security and Ho Chi Minh City Police, and apprehended the suspect on the spot along with the illegal equipment.
At the scene, authorities seized two active counterfeit BTS devices broadcasting fake messages under the names of Vietcombank and Vietnam Post. One additional device, not yet deployed, was also confiscated.
During the first three weeks of August 2025, the Department of Radio Frequencies (via Region II Center) has accurately detected and located several sources of unauthorized interference, collaborating with police to arrest four individuals operating fake BTS equipment. Among them were foreign nationals attempting to spread mass scam messages.
Experts have noted a rising trend in cybercrime tactics - fraudsters now impersonate government agencies, banks, and delivery services - signaling increasingly sophisticated, cross-border criminal operations.
This successful operation reflects the relentless effort, proactive strategy, and meticulous surveillance work of the Department of Radio Frequencies, with the Region II Center playing a key role. Its close cooperation with law enforcement has created a formidable "steel shield," contributing significantly to cybersecurity and public safety.
The arrests also mark a major achievement during the ongoing campaign against high-tech crime and are a meaningful contribution in celebration of the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and Vietnam’s National Day on September 2.
