On the afternoon of August 31, five tourists were swept away by powerful waves while swimming at a beach in Phu Quoc. Four of them were rescued in time, while one man remains in critical condition.

According to authorities from the Phu Quoc Special Administrative Zone, An Giang province, the incident occurred at approximately 5:30 p.m. near Beach Area No. 7. The group had entered the water despite deteriorating weather conditions and were soon caught by strong waves pushing them away from shore.

Rescue teams, assisted by several nearby beachgoers, quickly responded to the emergency. The four rescued tourists were brought back to shore and received immediate first aid. Their conditions have since stabilized.

However, one male tourist, whose identity has not yet been released, was rushed to Phu Quoc City Medical Center in a state of critical health. He has since been transferred to a higher-level hospital for emergency treatment.

Local officials have confirmed the tourist’s condition remains severe.

In response to the incident, the An Giang Department of Tourism and the People’s Committee of Phu Quoc Special Zone issued urgent instructions to local tourism businesses. All tourism service providers have been directed to deploy additional safety personnel and restrict beach access during unfavorable weather.

Just weeks earlier, on August 16, two other tourists died after their paddleboard capsized due to high waves at a beach in Tien Hai commune, An Giang.
