According to Bloomberg, Apple has made a notable change in its manufacturing operations with the latest launch of its Vision Pro headset.

The new version, which hits the shelves this week, features the M5 chip and a more comfortable head strap.

Information printed on the packaging indicates that the device was assembled in Vietnam, not in China like the first version released in February 2024 with the M2 chip.

Although the Vision Pro is not one of Apple’s flagship products, this move marks a step forward in the company’s strategy to diversify its supply chain and reduce dependence on China.

Most iPhones are still produced in China, but Apple has been gradually shifting manufacturing for U.S.-bound products to other countries.

The company continues to navigate the complex balance of maintaining relations with China while responding to tariffs imposed under the administration of former President Donald Trump.

Apple declined to comment on this recent change.

Previously, Apple had moved most iPhone production for the U.S. market to India in an effort to avoid new tariffs on Chinese-made goods.

Meanwhile, the company has been producing most of its AirPods and Apple Watch units in Vietnam and assembling certain iPad and HomePod models locally.

According to Bloomberg, Apple plans to manufacture a range of upcoming smart home products in Vietnam as well, including smart displays, indoor security cameras, and desktop robots.

In addition, Apple has ramped up production of some Mac models in Thailand and Malaysia and signed an agreement with the Indonesian government to manufacture components for AirPods Max.

On the packaging of the M5-powered Vision Pro, the label "Product of Vietnam" is clearly visible. However, the separately purchased Dual Knit headband is still labeled “Made in China,” indicating that Apple’s long-time Chinese partner, Luxshare Precision Industry, remains involved in accessory production.

It is currently unclear whether all Vision Pro units have shifted to assembly in Vietnam or only a portion. Apple typically divides production across countries depending on market demand and output requirements.

Apple is also expanding its domestic manufacturing presence in the United States. In collaboration with Corning, the company plans to start producing protective glass for all iPhone and Apple Watch models sold globally in the U.S.

However, the tech giant has no immediate plans to manufacture its most complex or flagship devices in the U.S., apart from select high-end Mac Pro models assembled in Texas.
