Thinner, lighter with the new iPhone “Air”

Sources including Bloomberg, MacRumors, and tech analyst Mark Gurman report that Apple is developing an ultra-thin iPhone variant called iPhone 17 Air. This new model could replace the underperforming “Plus” line.

A side-by-side comparison with the iPhone 16 Pro Max shows that the iPhone 17 Air could be even thinner than the iPhone 6. Internal component innovations and a new stacked battery design are expected to allow for a thickness of around 5.5mm, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. This would make it Apple’s thinnest iPhone ever (for reference, the iPhone 6 measured 6.9mm thick).

The ultra-thin profile might mean the device includes only one speaker, as there's no space left for a second speaker on the lower edge. Apple may also utilize ultra-light aluminum or recycled titanium to reduce weight while maintaining durability, offering a more comfortable grip.

Dynamic Island 2.0?

Dynamic Island, first introduced with the iPhone 14 Pro and continued through iPhone 16, may evolve significantly in iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models. According to leaker Majin Bu, Apple is testing a smaller, more compact version of the island by incorporating under-display camera (UDC) technology. This could increase screen real estate and deliver a more immersive viewing experience.

Software-wise, Dynamic Island could integrate more deeply with iOS 26, debut the new “Liquid Glass” interface, and become a hub for Apple Intelligence - Apple’s next-gen AI platform. It may offer smarter Siri interactions, predictive task suggestions, and even real-time AI-generated content.

A fully redesigned rear camera layout

One of the most visible changes in the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max is the camera system. Apple is rumored to adopt a horizontal camera bar stretching across the back, with the LiDAR sensor and flash moved to the right. This design, reminiscent of Google’s Pixel lineup, would mark a significant visual shift for the iPhone.

Leaked renders show a pronounced camera bump with elevated lenses, hinting at upgraded hardware - but also sparking concerns about bulk and pocketability. Notably, Apple may upgrade the telephoto lens to 48MP, aligning it with the 48MP wide and ultra-wide lenses introduced in previous Pro models.

If true, all three rear lenses will boast 48MP resolution, improving detail, clarity, and zoom capability. The front camera may also be upgraded from 12MP to 24MP, enhancing selfies and video calls. Some reports also mention a new anti-glare and smudge-resistant coating on the camera glass.

Bolder materials and colors

Apple previously impressed with “Natural Titanium” on the iPhone 15 Pro and “Desert Titanium” on the iPhone 16 Pro. For the iPhone 17 Pro, Apple might launch a striking new “Orange” finish - a vibrant and modern tone aimed at younger users and professionals seeking standout style.

Though currently only seen in leaked camera ring images, the color has garnered early praise from tech critics and trend-savvy consumers. Industry site PhoneArena notes that the bold orange hue helps differentiate premium models from mid-range ones, much like Desert Titanium did last year.

The iPhone 17 Air may come in pastel tones like light blue, purple, and green - an effort to attract younger users seeking more personalization.

USB-C remains, smarter cables coming

Apple is expected to retain the USB-C port introduced with iPhone 15, but upgrade the onboard cable management chip for faster charging and data transfer. This aligns with EU charging standard mandates and positions Apple for accessories that support AI and augmented reality (AR).

A new chapter for the iPhone

With so many bold design shifts - from the ultra-thin form and revamped Dynamic Island to a triple 48MP camera system and bold new colors - the iPhone 17 series could mark the most significant leap in iPhone design in recent years.

Apple appears to be refining not just the look, but the feel and function of its flagship device: lighter, smarter, and more personalized. In a maturing smartphone market, the iPhone 17 series may be Apple’s strategic ace to maintain its dominance. And if the leaks hold true, users can expect a futuristic masterpiece that still feels unmistakably Apple.
