Prolonged rains and upstream floodwaters have submerged central Hue and its historic sites, displacing thousands and isolating neighborhoods.
The historic citadel of Hue, along with its central districts, neighborhoods, public squares, and various urban areas, has been engulfed by murky floodwaters.In recent days, prolonged heavy rainfall combined with upstream flooding of the Huong River has severely inundated the Imperial City. Many historical landmarks have been submerged under as much as 2 meters of water.As of the afternoon of October 29, the Citadel remained surrounded by floodwaters. Although the Huong River peaked on the night of October 27, water levels have receded only slightly since.The Imperial City’s heritage site was inundated by about 1 meter of water, while key monuments and palaces were submerged to depths of approximately 0.3 meters.Adjacent sites such as Quoc Tu Giam and Long An Palace have also been heavily affected, with Tang Thu Pavilion submerged under more than 1 meter of water.According to the Hue City People's Committee, rising water levels in the Huong and Bo Rivers due to persistent rain caused widespread flooding across 32 wards and communes. Many areas reported flood depths of 1 to 2 meters.
Across Hue, over 44,500 houses were inundated. Numerous city streets were cut off, and traffic was nearly paralyzed during the peak of the flooding on October 27 and 28.This is one of the most intense and rain-heavy flooding events Hue has faced in years, severely disrupting residents' lives and damaging urban infrastructure.Emergency services worked through the night to evacuate households in low-lying areas of the city center, including Chi Lang, Tran Quang Khai, Nguyen Huu Canh, and Bui Thi Xuan streets.
Entire roads in neighborhoods such as Thuan Hoa, Phu Xuan, Vy Da, An Cuu, and Kim Long - along with areas around Aeon Mall - were submerged. Locals had to rely on boats to travel.Dozens of cars have been stranded for days at the Xuan Phu Culture and Sports Square.Similar conditions were seen in the Southeast Urban Area of Hue City.The Chi Lang Stadium, located in central Hue, has also been overtaken by floodwaters.According to the Hue City Civil Defense Command, other severely affected areas include communes like Quang Dien and Hoa Chau ward.
