In his introductory video message, Ambassador James Nickel shared: “After many years working across various Asian countries, I have witnessed firsthand the remarkable transformation of the region and the power of cooperation in driving inclusive growth. These experiences have deepened my respect for Southeast Asia and the values that Canada and Vietnam both embrace – openness, innovation, and collaboration.”
The ambassador emphasized that Vietnam is Canada’s largest trading partner in Southeast Asia. He noted that both countries have significant potential to expand economic relations through increased investment, enhanced cooperation in science, technology, and innovation, and mutual support for businesses to succeed in each other's markets.
Both nations are committed to promoting sustainable economic growth, which he believes is a major strength in their relationship.
“It’s exciting that this year, the first shipment of Canadian blueberries arrived in the Vietnamese market. This is just one example of the agricultural products that Canada hopes to share with Vietnam,” he said.
“Canada is also contributing to the growth of Vietnam’s burgeoning aviation sector, from pilot training simulators to cutting-edge aerospace technologies.”
Nickel also welcomed the growing defense and security cooperation between the two countries in recent years.
“Our shared focus remains on security cooperation and capacity building. Through military training and cooperation programs, we’ve provided educational and training opportunities to Vietnamese officers,” he said.
He added that through battlefield first aid training and support in developing and implementing staff officer training programs, Canada’s cooperation with Vietnam’s Department of Peacekeeping Operations is helping the country realize its goal of becoming a regional leader in peacekeeping.
“This strong relationship underscores our joint commitment to defense, security, and regional stability,” Ambassador Nickel emphasized.
According to the Canadian ambassador, the bilateral relationship is built on shared values, mutual respect, and a vision for a better future.
“I look forward to meeting Vietnamese friends and working with you all to further deepen this relationship. From Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi, from the Mekong Delta to the northern highlands – let’s work together toward a bright future,” he expressed.
